Hot Air Balloon

This is such a GREAT picture! She REALLY LOVES this experiment.

Magic Balloon

Melanie calls this the "Hot Air Balloon" experiment.  It's absolutely TOO COOL!
An empty water bottle, balloon, vinager, & baking soda is all it takes to create carbon dioxide.
The vinager & baking soda react to each other filling the water bottle and then the pressure rises to fill the balloon.
Cool, huh!

Mosiac Butterfly

What a perfect addition to Melanie's room!
This was such a fun, easy craft that I found at Michael's!
We are really lucky to have such a great craft store so close. Soon we'll have a Jo-Ann's!

Mud Hole!

Ezra, Melanie & Zane discovered the dirt hole under the swingset & filled it with water. OH MAN! What a mess...WHAT FUN!

A Flower For Mother's Day

Christopher came over to play with Melanie & asked to do a craft. On a whim I came up with this idea and he gave it to his Mom for Mother's Day. I thought that was really neat! Melanie's is the red one & I turned it into a magnet.

Kyle Is GROWING-UP

Just this Saturday when we were all in the car,  Duane & I were discussing when we should go & vote. Kyle joined in and asked if he could. We told him that he wasn't old enough that he had to be 18. He then said "OK, I'll just vote in the next one for the next president." Duane & I just sat there & thought about that for a minute...HE WILL be able to vote for the next president!!!! Can you believe that????? Kyle will be able to vote & SOON. As it is he's already making mental notes on what kind of car he wants. Him & Duane go back & forth discussing cars, responsibility, jobs & they are even looking at cars on CRAIGSLIST. On Sunday I came home to a spotless house. Kyle went through vacuumed, dusted, mopped, did his laundry, cleaned his bathroom, cleaned Melanie's room & organized her toys. I just can't believe he's old enough to do ALL of these things or even talk about them. I remember taking him to & from pre-school, kindergarten, & every other grade. I remember when he enjoyed me coming to his school to have lunch with him. Now if we're seen in public together we're a couple feet apart. HA! :) He goes to the movies by himself or with friends. I took him to the Dr. yesterday because he has had a cough for nearly a month. (turns out he has strep) But that is beside the point...he weighed 110 lbs and stands 5'3 and a half inches. WHAT??? He is a half an inch shorter than ME! Time is seriously going WAY TOO FAST. My kids just need to stop growing, just for a couple of years as well as Lori's. JUST STOP GROWING!!!

Melanie Loses Her Pants!

I got this little trampoline a few months back for $7.00 at the thrift store-nearly BRAND NEW! Everyone loves to jump on it in little spurts through out the day. It's totally FUN! This video of Melanie is just the cutest!

Planting Some Seeds

We received this pack of seeds in the mail & decided to try to plant them in a planter box. Add a little color to our front yard. I think they'll be a variety of random wild flowers. We will see. A little dirt, a little water, a little sun & a LOTTA love from Melanie & they should grow! I'll keep ya posted!

Mmmmm!

This blue birthday cake ice cream from Braum's is THE BEST!!! Kyle introduced Melanie to this flavor. Before that she had only tried vanilla, chocolate & strawberry which she never really took a liking to. But now...YUM!

Sidewalk Drawing

Melanie's pretty good at drawing. The flower on the bottom right was my example, the rest she drew. That's pretty good.

Look Alike

WOW...doesn't this doll look JUST like Melanie? It's as though Melanie was the model for the design.

McGurk Family Fencing Company

So we rebuilt our own wooden fence in March. And in April we helped my Dad build a chain link fence. We are just gaining all kinds of construction experience. Anyone wanna hire us...will work for food. And money of course! Just kidding. I love family helping family, and having fun in the process. Isn't that what it's all about?

Bye, Bye Milkie-Pies

In the last week of March Melanie and I had this conversation... I was laying with her in bed putting her to sleep for the night and we were just a snugglin' without nursing... I said, "Melanie, if you don't want milkie-pies anymore why don't you just tell mama?" (she had been going to sleep without it because she was stuffed up from a cold)
Melanie "I feel like my body is telling me I'm too old for milkie pies."
Me (shock! saddness! elation!)
Me "Well, if you feel like your body is telling you you're too old than you should listen to your body. You're the one who knows your body best. You should trust yourself."
Melanie laying on her back, she puts her hands up like she's holding an open book and says, "The milkie-pies are closed for Kyle & Melanie (now she closes her hands) but they'll be open for your next baby."
WHAT??? I just layed there, nearly speechless and we cuddled-snuddled. As we snuggled extra close; happy, sad, proud, silent tears ran down my face and I wispered "I love you, Melanie."
I can't remember EXACTLY when she started calling breast feeding Milkie-Pies. Oh, how I wish I could remember! (I should have written it down!) But, I think it started just before she turned 2. It started with me changing her diapers as an infant & she would cry & sign "milk". I would say/sing "No cries, no cries-you'll have some milkie-pies!" I was just trying to soothe her by rhyming and singing. I had no idea we would create something so special and all our own. Then one day she signed "milk" and said "milkie-pies." I thought THAT was the neatest thing! I remember saying "what?" Then signing "milk" and saying "milkie pies?" And she said "yes." I grabbed her up, laughing and squishing her! "You want some milkie pies!?" I told Duane, I told pretty much everyone. And ever since then we have been calling mama's special milk, MILKIE-PIES.
I am so proud that I breastfed my daughter for 4 and a half years. It has nurished her, soothed her and protected her. My special milk has givien her such a grand foundation of health that is ummatchable. I am proud that I breast fed my daughter til SHE WAS READY to wean. I received looks, arguments, opinions, remarks and loads of discouragment from people. I also received support, encouragement and love from others. But no matter what people said I did what I FELT was right and waited til she weaned herself. I KNEW she would wean herself. Nobody breastfeeds til their early 20's. I'm glad I followed my insticnts to trust myself my body,my daughter & GOD. In turn, it looks as though I have taught my daughter to trust herself, her instinct and GOD also.
Thank you Milkie-Pies. You have left me with many fond memories. I have cherrished our time and you will most definitly be missed. I'm so proud and thankful my body and mind were strong enough to do this. I'm so thankful. There are many things in my life, if given the chance I would change. But extended breastfeeding Melanie is not one of them. It has definitly been one of the highlights of motherhood for me. I origionally wrote this post on March 30th. because I wanted to make sure I remembered my conversation with Melanie exactly. But since I wrote it Melanie has had Milkie-Pies at least once a day. Which was a big cut back from what she would normally do. She even stopped "switching sides." Which left me a little lop sided occassionally. HA! But I think now Milkie-Pies are all finished. It's been a week since she asked for and had any. I'm a little sad. Melanie is growing up. Kyle's growing up. I'll never breastfeed again. I'll never have another baby in my tummy. But, I will definitly have wonderful, loving memories.

Baking Together

While in Marshall, Melanie went blackberry picking around my Dad's property and helped him bake a Blackberry Pie. She's such a good little helper. She especially LOVES to help in the kitchen. I forgot to take a picture of the pie though...UGH!!! But trust me, it was beautiful & delicious!

Marshall, TX Easter Egg Hunt

We went to visit my Dad & Margaret in Marshall. Kyle had 5 acres of beautiful land to hide Easter Eggs in for Melanie. In the end she got a few eggs filled with jelly beans & M&M's, with a grand prize of Polly Pocket Dolls. These dolls are too cute and perfect for her doll house!
